ZOMBIES
Town and Country is a collage series. Each of the photographs that have been cut out of magazines comprise at least one human figure and are accompanied by the artist’s hand-written commentary in the style of a title. This added commentary halts our gaze on those glossy images that we have become so used to seeing pass before our eyes at such speed. He makes them talk outside their commercial and reassuring discourse. The written text brilliantly ignores the “message” instilled in the easily decodable “visuals” and introduces an element of uncertainty into their reading.
All the texts in
Town and Country speak about death as if it were the subject of the series. However, the work is more complex. Claude Closky never presents his audience with a “picture” of reality; instead he is more interested in what his cultural background and his imagination urge him to impose on this reality. In other words: Closky focuses his work on those modalities of representation, which give reality its form. The verb “to die” introduces a framework for each collage in the
Town and Country series: to die in the street, on the beach, at a masked ball... Closky writes “To die barefoot”, or “To die in the kitchen” as if wearing shoes or cooking could kill. Nothing can prevent us from losing our lives on the road, or lying on the grass, or barefoot, or on horseback. But these circumstances are not enough to die from. They are indifferent to the event, unique and unrepresentable, of dying.
The characters in the photos promote the image of eternal youth, a form of immortality. Closky does not denounce the repressed in fashion and advertising. This is an old story that would put him on the side of the message. It's not the position he stands for in his work. If we look back to the subject of the series, we need to focus on the deficiencies and incongruities they produce.
Each element of
Town and Country rests on the superposition of the frozen replica of the living -- the magazine photo -- and the seemingly improvised hand-written annotation; the authority of printed matter and the fragility of the hand movement. This gap between the industrial reproduction and the marked sentence, between different media, different gestures, different messages, brings us back to the idea of death in the most unkindly way. Besides, as it isn't explained, the passing away in different situations and contexts of the characters is simultaneously removed. To die in the bath, at the gym, whichever way. But to die of what? The connection is missing, the image of death is broken up into pieces. The most striking distortion comes from the fact that these figures, which are supposed to embody eternity and a better future, have suddenly come to embody final disappearance, an experience that is both anti-commercial and impossible "to be lived". The deficiencies and incongruities that manifest themselves in
Town and Country create an allegory of death. Claude Closky sheds light on the impossibility to describe death and nothing else.
Closky’s work is about representation, it isn't about making figurative images. In this work, using completely banal contemporary images, and by relating these to the unrepresentable subject of death, he dismembers the operation of giving appearance to things and the fabrication of resemblance. The meaning of the collages drifts away. Their absurdity stems not from the vanity of images and words, but from the imminent unease of representing the subject of death with these texts and images. The indecent regurgitation of this anti-documentary formula paints a grim picture of a future without precedent and without horizon: a world of the living-dead.
Here the only repetition is death; an experience that cannot be reproduced.

Town and Country est une série de collages. Des photographies découpées dans les magazines, comportant toutes une figure humaine au moins, sont accompagnées chaque fois d’un commentaire écrit à la main par l’artiste à la manière d’un titre. Ce commentaire, posé après-coup, arrête le regard sur des images lisses, qui passent d’habitude très vite devant nos yeux. Il les fait parler à côté de leur discours commercial et rassurant, il les déplace. Le texte ignore superbement le « message » porté par un « visuel » aisément déchiffrable, et introduit l’incertitude dans la signification énoncée, brouillant définitivement l'évidence qui le caractérise.
Tous les textes de
Town and Country parlent de la mort, comme s’il s’agissait d’une série « sur » la mort. Ce n’est pas si simple. Claude Closky ne nous a jamais proposé un « tableau » de la réalité, il s’intéresse plus au traitement que son imaginaire et sa culture imposent à cette réalité. Il s’intéresse aux modalités de la représentation qui donnent sa forme à la réalité. Le verbe mourir introduit la description d'un cadre sur chaque collage de
Town and Country : mourir dans la rue, à la plage, dans un bal masqué... Closky écrit « mourir pieds nus », ou encore « mourir dans la cuisine » comme si ne pas porter de chaussures ou cuisiner pouvait tuer. Rien n’empêche de perdre la vie sur la route ou allongé dans l’herbe, pieds nus ou à cheval, mais ces circonstances n’y suffisent pas. Elles sont indifférentes à l’événement, unique et irreprésentable, qu’est la mort.
Les personnages sur les photos promeuvent l’image d’une jeunesse éternelle, une forme d’immortalité. Closky ne dénonce pas le refoulé de la mode et de la publicité : cette évidence-là le mettrait du côté du message à son tour et ce n’est pas la position qu’il tient dans son travail. Et si l’on considère de nouveau le projet sous l’angle du sujet traité, on doit alors s’intéresser aux manques et aux dissonances qui le constituent.
Chaque élément de
Town and Country repose sur la superposition d’une réplique figée du vivant, la photo de magazine, et d’une annotation manuscrite apparemment improvisée, l’autorité de l’imprimé d’une part et la fragilité du mouvement de la main de l’autre. Cette coupure, entre la reproduction industrielle et la phrase tracée, entre des supports, des gestes, des propos tenus, reconduit à l’idée de la mort de la manière la plus inquiétante. Par ailleurs, évoquée dans divers décors ou situations, donc représentée, la disparition des personnages est simultanément évacuée dans la mesure où elle n’est nulle part expliquée. Mourir dans un bain, à la gym, qu’importe, mais mourir de quoi ? Le raccord est absent, l’image de la mort est en morceaux. La distorsion la plus vive vient de ce que ces figures de l’éternité vouées à prédire un avenir meilleur, sont soudain chargées d’incarner la disparition définitive, une expérience radicalement non commerciale, « du jamais vécu ». La séparation et le manque qui se manifestent dans
Town and Country allégorisent la mort, dont Claude Closky met en scène le caractère indescriptible, et rien d’autre.
Closky travaille sur la représentation, et ne fait pas une œuvre figurative. Au moyen d’images contemporaines parfaitement banales, en les associant avec une idée infigurable, la mort, il disloque l’opération qui consiste à donner un visage aux choses et à fabriquer de la ressemblance. Le sens des collages dérive. Leur absurdité ne vient pas de la vanité des images et des mots, vieille histoire, mais de la gêne qu’il y a soudain à nommer la mort avec ces images et ces textes-là. Le ressassement indécent d’une formule anti documentaire dessine un futur sans précédent et sans horizon dans un monde de morts-vivants.
Ici la seule répétition c’est la mort ; son expérience n’est pas reproduite.
